I'm Kevan Stuart. I've been building production software for 18+ years and I still find it interesting — which I think says more about the field than it does about me.

I was recently a principal engineer at Platter, a Shopify app and theme platform that's one of fewer than 100 Platinum partners globally. My approach to a problem hasn't changed much over the years: I work through it in docs and diagrams before I write a line of code. It slows things down at the start and speeds everything else up.

I like working with people who are earlier in their careers. Not to tell them what to do — to give them a chance to figure it out first, and then have an opinion on it together.

This site

I started writing here because I kept having the same conversations — in code reviews, in 1:1s, in architecture discussions — and it seemed more efficient to write them down once. Some of it is technical. Most of it is about the parts of engineering that don't show up in the code.
